Buxton

  • Buxton is a Spa town located in the Peak District of the County of Derbyshire. It is the highest market town in England with an elevation of 1,000 feet (305m).
  • It was a Roman Spa called Aquae Arnemetiae, which is still famous for its waters today. The mineral bearing waters, known as ‘Chalybeate’, have been drunk as a cure for ailments for centuries.

History

  • It is one of only two Roman Bath Spa Towns in Britannia, the other being Bath, known as Aquae Sulis.
  • In 1779 Buxton Bath Charity founded the Devonshire Hospital, now the Royal Devonshire Hospital, as a Hospital for the poor.
  • In 1882 the Devonshire Dome was added, making it the world’s largest unsupported Dome at the time.

Roman Sites

  • The Roman Baths are no longer visible, as they are under the site of The Crescent Hotel, built in 1780.

Museums

  • Buxton Museum and Art Gallery
    • Located at Terrace Road, Buxton, Derbyshire.
    • A Hoard of 232 Roman Coins with dates ranging over the 367 years of Roman occupation, including bronze jewellery, which would have been thrown into the Baths, are on display in the Museum.
