Callimachus of Cyrene

  • Callimachus of Cyrene, also known as Callimachus (c.310-c.240 BCE), was a Greek Poet and Scholar who lived and worked in the Great Library of Alexandria.
  • He was never made Chief Librarian.

Works

  • ‘Pinakes’
    • In c. 245 BCE, he produced a Catalogue of the contents of the Great Library of Alexandria called the ‘Pinakes’ (meaning Lists), now lost, in 120 volumes.
    • It was organised by author and by subject.
  • Allegedly, Callimachus produced 800 works, but only 6 hymns and 64 Epigrams have survived.
