Callisto

  • Callisto was a Nymph in Greek Mythology, the daughter of King Lycaon.
  • Callisto is also the constellation of Ursa Major, the Great Bear.

The Myth

  • Callisto was seduced by Zeus, who disguised himself as Artemis, and Callisto became pregnant.
  • Callisto was expelled from being one of Artemis’ followers.
  • Zeus’ wife, Hera, turned Callisto into a bear as punishment.
  • Callisto gave birth to a son, Arcas.
  • After he grew to be a man, he was out hunting bears one day and was just about to kill her when she was transformed into a star.
  • Callisto became Ursa Major, the Great Bear.
