Campus Martius

  • The Campus Martius was a 500 acre (200 hectare) area of fields between the River Tiber and the Ancient City of Rome where major events and festivals were held.

Temples

  • Campus Martius meant the ‘Field of Mars’, and Mars was the most important God in the Roman Pantheon of Gods, until he was displaced by Jupiter.
  • Four Temples were built here between c.550-324 BCE.
  • Seven Temples were built between 324-179 BCE.
  • Six Temples were built between 146 BCE and 65 CE.
