Cardiff Roman Fort

• Cardiff Roman Fort was a coastal Fort whose walls were included in the later Cardiff Castle.

History

• It was constructed in c.290 CE by the breakaway State under Carausius, after the Legio II Augusta left Caerleon and dismantled their Fortress.
• The construction is similar to that of the Saxon Shore Forts, such as Portchester in Portsmouth harbour.

The Roman Fort

• Cardiff Roman Fort walls are intact and have been incorporated into the walls of Cardiff Castle.
