Cashtal yn Ard

  • Cashtal yn Ard (c. 2,000 BCE), meaning ‘castle of the heights’ in Manx, is a Bronze Age Chambered Tomb or Cairn in Cornaa, Maughold, on the Isle of Man.
  • The Tomb is considered to be one of the most significant Megalthic Tombs in the British Isles.

Description

  • Cashtal yn Ard was excavated by the archeologists H.J.Fleure and G.H.Neely during the 1930’s and again in 1999. They noted its resemblance to the cairns of Sardinia and to Bridestones cairn in Cheshire.
  • The Tomb has an open forecourt leading to five chambers, which were originally covered with stone slabs, but have since been removed and re-used in local buildings.
