Castlerigg Stone Circle

  • Castlerigg Stone Circle is an early Bronze Age Monument consisting of 40 stones arranged in a circle and dated to c. 3,200 BCE.
  • It is located in Castle Lane, 1.5 miles (3km) due east of Keswick in the Lake District National Park of North West England.

Description

  • The stones are arranged up on a plateau formed by the convergence of three valleys, which are formed by the surrounding mountains.
  • The highest stone has a height of over 7 feet (2.3m) and the heaviest stone weighs 16 tons. The circle has a diameter of c. 100 feet (c.30m).
  • The Site is owned by the National Trust and managed by English Heritage.
  • It is one of the earliest Bronze Age Monuments in Britain.
