- The village of Catterick is located on the river Swale in the County of North Yorkshire.
- It was once a Roman Fort called Cataractonium which guarded the bridge taking Dere Street across the river Swale.
History
- Cataractonium is listed in Iter I and Iter II of the Antonine Itinerary.
- It also appears on Ptolemy's Geographia (c.150 CE).
- In 1914 it became a military site once again when the Catterick Garrison was built nearby.
