Chalcedon

  • Chalcedon was an ancient Hellenisitc Roman port city, now located in the Kadikoy District of Istanbul, Turkey.
  • It was located on the mouth of the Bosphorus, on the opposite side to Byzantium, and was in the Province of Bithynia.

History

  • It was founded as a colony by the Greeks from Megara in 685 BCE.

Council of Chalcedon

  • Chalcedon is important in Christianity for being the location of the Council of Chalcedon in 451 CE.
  • This was where the schism over Arianism occurred, and the Eastern Orthodox Church split permanently from the Western Catholic Church.

Haydarpasa Railway Project

  • Construction work on the Haydarpasa Railway Station has revealed the ancient harbour of Chalcedon, graveyards and other important Finds. It is being managed by the Istanbul Archaeology Museums.
  • It is not open to the public.

    • The museum holds the Finds from ancient Chalcedon.
