Champagne Bottle Sizes

  • Champagne is the only AOC wine to be sold in a wide variety of bottle sizes, from a quarter bottle all the way to a 40 bottle Melchizedek.
  • The bottles are named after Biblical Kings, following Champagne winemaking tradition.

    • (1/4) Quarter Bottle (20cl)
    • (1/2) Half Bottle or ‘Fillette’ (37.5cl)
    • (1) Standard Bottle (75cl)
    • (2) Magnum (1.5L)
    • (4) Jeroboam (3L)
      • Jeroboam was the King of Israel during the period when Rome was founded in 753 BCE.
    • (6) Rehoboam (4.5L)
      • A son of King Solomon who became King of Judah in 933 BCE.
    • (8) Methusaleh (6L)
      • Methusaleh is mentioned in the Book of Genesis in The Bible. He was the Grandfather of Noah and lived to be 969 years old.
    • (12) Salmanazar (9L)
      • Salmanazar was the King of Assyria in 1250 BCE.
    • (16) Balthazar (12L)
      • One of the Three Wise Men, along with Melchior and Gaspar who delivered Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh to the infant Jesus.
    • (20) Nabuchadnezzar (15L)
      • Nabuchadnezzar was the King of the Chaldeans in 604 BCE. He invaded Israel, destroyed the First Temple of Solomon and removed the population to Babylon, known as the Babylonian Exile.
    • (24) Melchior (18L)
      • Another of the Three Wise Men, along with Balthazar and Gaspar.
    • (24) Solomon (18 or 20L)
      • Solomon was the son of David and King of Israel. He built the First Temple of Jerusalem.
    • (35) Sovereign (25L)
      • Named after the cruise liner ‘Sovereign of the Seas’ launched in 1988 and the biggest cruise liner at that time.
    • (36) Goliath or Primat (27L)
      • Goliath was a Giant who was challenged by David.
    • (40) Melchizedek or Midas (30L)
      • Melchizedek was a priest and King of Salem.
      • Midas was the King in Greek Mythology who could turn anything into Gold at his touch, unfortunately this included his own daughter.
