Cheiroballistra

  • The Cheiroballistra was a Roman Siege Machine that consisted of a Torsion Catapult that shot metal bolts.
  • The name is from the Greek, ‘Cheiro’ (hand) and ‘Ballista’ (shooter). It was invented by Hero of Alexandria (c.10-70 CE).

Description

  • The Cheiroballistra was probably towed on a cart by two mules.
  • Every Centuria in the Roman Legion had one Cheiroballistra.
  • There were a total of 55 in every Legion.
  • Catapults were also carried on the decks of Galleys in the Roman Navy.
