- Clysma was an ancient port in Egypt on the Gulf of Suez in the Red Sea.
- It is now the modern port of Suez.
History
- Clysma was rebuilt by Trajan (98-117 CE) at the same time as Trajan's Canal and described by Ptolemy (c.150 CE) as a fortified town.
- In 179 CE, an Auxiliary Unit was based here called the Ala Veterana Gallica.
- By the fourth century CE, it appears to have replaced Myos Hormos and Berenice as the Departure point for the Trade with India, transferring the Goods to the Nile via Trajan's Canal.
Trajan's Canal
- Clysma was the Terminus for Trajan's Canal built in c. 112 CE, which started at Fort Babylon on the Nile.
- This provided an alternative route to the Red Sea, rather than the Desert route via Coptos to Myos Hormos.
