Coconut

  • The coconut is the fruit of the coconut palm tree which grows in the Tropics between latitudes 26° north and 26° south.
  • It is mostly used in cooking for its milk, oil, water and flesh.

Description

  • Although today the coconut is cultivated around the world, it seems to have developed primarily in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.
  • The Coconut tree needs high humidity and warmth, which is why they are found mostly in the Tropics.
  • The tree resists saltwater and the coconuts can float for hundreds of miles over the Ocean.
  • Coconut leaves can be used as a roofing material and timber from the coconut tree can be used to build houses and boats.
  • It is the National Symbol of the Maldives.
