Codex Theodosianus

  • The Codex Theodosianus is a compilation of Roman Laws made under the Roman Emperor Theodosius II (402-450 CE).
  • It was followed 100 years later by another compilation known as the Digest of Justinian (529-534 CE).

Description

  • The Codex Theodosianus consists of 16 Books containing c. 2,500 Constitutions (Principles) of Roman Law enacted under the Christian Emperors since 312 CE.
  • The Codex was jointly enforced on 1 January 439 CE by Theodosius II in the Eastern Empire and Valentinian III in the Western Roman Empire.
