Cohors Togata

This was a Cohort of the Praetorian Guard that guarded the Imperial Palace and accompanied the Roman Emperor within the City of Rome.

Their duties were performed within the Pomerium, the sacred boundary of the city, where under Roman Law no arms could be carried:
Therefore these soldiers could not wear full armour and equipment and were dressed in the civilian togae: However, they were permitted to keep their sword, the Gladius, at hand.
