Constellation

  • A Constellation is a group of stars in the Celestial Sphere which produce a shape and which has been given a name, usually from Mythology, for example the Constellation of Ursa Major or The Great Bear.
  • In 1922 the International Astronomical Union recognised 88 Constellations.

Roman Astronomy

  • 48 Constellations were listed in 150 CE by Ptolemy in a Star Catalogue called The Almagest.
  • The Constellations are mostly derived from Babylonian Astronomy, of which thirty date back to the late Bronze Age.
