Crucifixion

  • Crucifixion was a punishment performed by the Roman State against Pirates, rebel Slaves and Enemies of the State. It was finally abolished by Constantine I in 337 CE.
  • The prisoner was nailed to a wooden cross and left to die. It was carried out along the Roman Roads leading into the city.

Mass Crucifixion of Slaves

  • After the defeat of Spartacus in 71 CE, a mass crucifixion of 6,000 defeated slaves took place at intervals along the whole 130 miles of the Appian Way.
  • There were no further Slave Rebellions.
