Daedalus and Icarus

  • In Greek Mythology, the Myth of Daedalus and Icarus is about a father and son who acquire the ability to fly.
  • They constructed bird like wings to escape from their captivity in a tower, Daedalus survived but Icarus flew too close to the Sun, whereupon his wings melted and he fell to his death.

The Myth

  • Daedalus builds the Labyrinth
    • Daedalus was a renowned architect and craftsman who became a symbol of wisdom and knowledge.
    • Daedalus was ordered to build the Labyrinth for King Minos, who wanted it to imprison his wife’s son, the Minotaur.
    • But to keep its secret, after it was completed, Daedalus was imprisoned in a tower with his son Icarus.
  • Daedalus builds wings to escape
    • They escaped by flying out of the tower on wings made of feathers tied together with string and anchored in wax, but Icarus flew too close to the sun, the wax melted and he fell to his doom.
    • Daedalus flew on to Sicily and settled there.
  • King Minos searches for Daedalus
    • King Minos searched every land and island until he found him.
    • He arrived at the court of the king of Sicily and asked a riddle that only Daedalus could solve: How could a string be run through a spiral seashell?
    • Daedalus was fetched and proceeded to tie the string round an ant, who walked through the shell and out of a hole at the far end enticed by a drop of honey.
    • Minos knew it was Daedalus, but before he could kill him, the King invited King Minos to take a bath where his daughters killed him and Daedalus was saved.
