Dardanelles

  • The Dardanelles is one of the two Turkish Straits, the other is the Bosphorus.

Hellespont

  • The Dardanelles was known in antiquity as the Hellespont.
  • The Strait is 42 m (68 km) long, and 0.75 miles (1.2 km) wide.
  • It is bordered to the north by the Gallipoli Peninsular or Thracian Chersonese.
  • To the south on the Turkish coast was the ancient city of Troy.

Bosphorus

  • The Bosphorus is the other Turkish Strait. It is an 18 mile (30 km) stretch of water flowing past Istanbul and connecting the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. It is between 160-330 ft (50-110 m) deep.
  • At its narrowest point it is only 2,300 ft (700 m) wide and is S-shaped.
