Demotic

  • The Demotic Script was also an alternative script to Egyptian Hieroglyphs, and was used for documents and contracts in Egypt. It evolved around 650 BCE and stopped being used by around 400 CE, whereas the Bohairic Coptic Script continues to be used in Egypt today.

The Coptic Script

  • Coptic was the Ancient Egyptian language written in Hieroglyphic script, but adapted into the Greek alphabet yet remaining grammatically similar.
  • This occurred during the first century CE.
  • Coptic then divided into two main dialects, ‘Sahidic’ and ‘Bohairic’. The Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria still uses Bohairic today as its liturgical language, whereas Demotic stopped being used by around 400 CE.
