- To the southwest stands Hermannsdenkmal, a Monument to the German Leader Arminius, who defeated three Roman Legions at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9CE.
Hermannsdenkmal
- Arminius, known as Hermann in Germany today, is considered the symbol of Germany’s successful resistance to the Roman Empire.
- At the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (9 CE), Arminius defeated three Roman Legions, which ended Roman ambitions to occupy Germany.
- Hermannsdenkmal was erected in 1875 by Kaiser Wilhelm I in the Teutoburg Forest on what was then thought to be the battle site. The location has now been identified at Kalkriese, 62 miles (100km) to the northwest.
Externsteine
- The Externsteine is a group of thirteen tall naturally occurring sandstone rocks that rise in the Teutoburg Forest, near Hom-Bad Meinberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
- The site is a major tourist destination located 7 miles (11km) southeast from Detmold.
- The stones are not linked to Bronze Age activity, but despite this, they became known during the twentieth century as the German Stonehenge.
