Diary of Merer

  • The Diary of Merer is a logbook written in Egyptian Hieroglyphs on Papyrus dating from the period of Pharaoh Khufu (2,589-2,566 BCE).
  • It describes the transport of limestone blocks along the Nile to build the Great Pyramid.

History

  • In 2013, a French group of Archeologists from the Sorbonne University, Paris, France, found a Papyrus Text in a cave at Wadi al-Jarf, Hieroglyphs and Hieratic.
  • It was the Logbook of an Egyptian Official which describes the ferrying of limestone blocks along the Nile from the quarries at Tura to the Great Pyramid at Giza.
  • The Papyrus dates from the period of Khufu (2589-2566 BCE), making the Papyrus 4,500 years old.
  • The Papyrus describes a period of months from July to November.
  • 40 sailors worked to complete 3 round trips every 10 days.
  • It is thought they were delivering the external cladding stones to be fitted to the outside of the Great Pyramid
