Djed

  • The Djed was a sort of pillar, representing the tree that had encircled Osiris in his coffin. Osiris is usually depicted as holding the Djed in one hand.
  • It was the symbol for stability and rebirth.

Raising of the Djed:

  • During the Pharaoh’s Jubilee year, a ceremony called ‘Raising the Djed’ occurred, where a wooden Djed Pillar would be hauled upright by ropes during the month of Chiok.
  • Raising the Djed Pillar symbolised the rebirth of Osiris and hoped to bring fertility to the recently sown crops.
