Epicurus

  • Epicurus (341-270 BCE) was a controversial Greek Philosopher who opposed Platonism.
  • He founded the Philosophy of Epicureanism, based on the belief in empiricism and free will.

Works

  • The majority of his 300 works have been lost.
  • The main source for his teaching comes from later Roman authors, such as Diogenes Laertius.
  • His surviving Works are Letters to Menoecceus, Pythocles and Herodotus and two collections of quotes, the Principal Doctrines and the Vatican Sayings, found in the Vatican Library in 1888.
  • Also, some fragments remain of a work called ‘On Nature’ in 37 Books.
