The Garamantes
- During the Roman Period the Fezzan was controlled by the Garamantes, a Roman Client Kingdom, which controlled the Camel Caravans of the Trans Sahara Trade between Carthage and the Sahel countries. They passed through the Fezzan and the Erg of Bilma.
Roman Client Kingdom
- In 19 BCE Septimius Flaccus invaded the Garamantes.
- In 50 CE, during the reign Claudius, Suetonius Paulinus, invaded the Garamantes in the Fezzan, and they then became a Roman Client Kingdom until the third century CE.
- He used a Roman Camel Corps to cross the Sahara.
Erg of Bilma
- The Erg of Bilma, is a Sand Sea in Niger that was crossed by the Camel Caravans. It covers an area of 176,000 square miles (455,000 square km).
- A chain of 10 oases in the Kaouar Cliffs, which protect them from the Desert Dunes, run north-south for 150 miles (241km), ending in the Bilma Oasis. This is the last Oasis before reaching the Sahel.
