First Council of Nicaea

  • In 325 CE the Emperor Constantine I convened the First Council of Nicaea with 318 Christian Bishops to debate and decide various issues. Nicaea was an Ancient Greek city, located today in a suburb of Iznik, Turkey.
  • It was the first of the Ecumenical Councils, held to resolve the differences in Doctrine within Christianity.

Conclusions of the Council of Nicaea

  1. The Council of Nicaea rejected and banned Arianism, and declared Arian a heretic.
  2. Instead the Council accepted Trinitarianism
  3. 318 Bishops attended the Council of Nicaea between the 20th May to 19th June 325 CE.
  4. The Council established the Date of Easter to be the first Sunday after the Full Moon, following the Vernal Equinox on the 21st March. (In Western Christianity this makes it the period between 22 March to the 25th April)
  5. The Council also produced the Nicene Creed
  6. The basis for Canon Law was laid down.
  7. The Council banned Roman Numerology as an unapproved belief, along with Roman Astrology and Roman Magic.
