Flavia Caesariensis

  • After 293 CE, Flavia Caesariensis was one of four Provinces in the Diocese of Britannia which included London. It lasted until 408 CE.
  • The Province was created when the existing two Provinces of Britannia Inferior and Britannia Superior were further subdivided during the Tetrarchy of Diocletian (285-305 CE).

The Four Provinces of Britannia (293-408 CE)

  • In 293 CE Britannia Inferior was split into two:
    1. Flavia Caesariensis (293-408 CE)
    2. Britannia Secunda (293-408 CE)
      • Capital at Eburacum York
  • Britannia Superior was split into two:
    1. Britannia Prima (293-408 CE)
      • Capital at Corinium Dobunnorum Cirencester (uncertain). This was the largest of the four and included Wales and the West country.
    2. Maxima Caesariensis (293-408 CE)
    3. There may have been a fifth Province called Valentia between 369-408 CE.
