Gaius Gracchus

Biography

  • In 133 BCE, his elder brother Tiberius Gracchus had attempted to pass reforms of the Agrarian Laws but the Roman Senate had organised a Riot in which he was murdered by a mob.
  • In 123-122 BCE, when Gaius Gracchus was in turn elected as Tribune of the Plebs, he was determined to pass the same Reforms in memory of his brother.
  • His Reforms caused a violent reaction from the Roman Senate and he was forced to commit suicide. 3,000 of his supporters were murdered afterwards by the dictator Lucius Opimius.

Lex Sempronia Agraria

  • The Agrarian Laws passed by Tiberius Gracchus in 133 BCE were revived and added to by Gaius Gracchus in 123 BCE.
