- Gallia Cisalpina was the area of Roman Italy south of the Alps and north of the River Rubicon.
- It became a Roman Senatorial Propraetorial Province in 203 BCE.
History
- Originally Gaul was divided into two Roman Provinces:
- Gallia Cisalpina
- or Nearer Gaul meaning Gaul this side of the Alps, north of the River Rubicon.
- Gallia Transalpina
- or Further Gaul meaning Gaul on the other side of the Alps.
- Gallia Cisalpina
- In 49 BCE Julius Caesar gave the inhabitants of Gallia Cisalpina Roman Citizenship.
- In 41 BCE Gallia Cisalpina was absorbed into Italy and later divided into 4 Regions which then became part of the 11 Regions of Italia:
- Regio VIII Gallia Cispadana
- Regio IX Liguria
- Regio X Venetia et Histria
- Regio XI Gallia Transpadana
