Getty Villa

  • The Getty Villa is one of two campuses of the J. Paul Getty Museum, the other being the Getty Centre, and is located east of Malibu, at 17985 Pacific Coast Highway, Pacific Palisades neighbourhood, 20 miles (32km) west of Los Angeles, California, USA.
  • The Museum is dedicated to the Art and Culture of Ancient Greece, Rome and Etruria.

Description

  • The Villa was commenced in 1954 and inspired by the Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum.
  • Notable Works are the Landsowne Heracles marble statue (125 CE) and the Victorious Youth bronze statue (c.300-100 BCE).
  • The Villa occupies a site of 64 acres (26 hectares) with four Roman Gardens, filled with fountains and statues, that are planted with herbs, shrubs and bushes from the Roman Era.
  • There is an Auditorium and Theatre which hold musical performances relating to the Classical Period.

The Collection

  • The Museum holds a Collection of 44,000 Antiquities dating from 6,500 BCE to 400 CE.
  • On display are Bronze and Marble Statues, Busts, Coins and Jewellery.
  • The museum holds an 8 ft (2.4m) statue of the Roman Emperor Tiberius.
