Gymnaseum

  • The Roman Gymnaseum, also spelt Gymnasium, was a group of buildings that included the Roman Baths and was based on the Greek Gymnasium where men could exercise, bathe and study.
  • The Roman Gymnasium focused on the Baths as the centre of Roman social activity which included swimming pools and libraries for study, but with less emphasis on other sports. In Greece, the Gymnasium continued to focus on exercise and study, to separate the Greek identity from the Roman occupation.
