Heraklion

  • Heraklion is a cathedral city and port located on the northern coast of the Heraklion Region of Crete.
  • It became a Roman city in 68 BCE and joined the Province of Crete.

History

  • The city dates back to the Minoan Period (c.3000-c.1100 BCE).
  • The Ruins of the Palace of Knossos are located 3 miles (5 km) east of Heraklion.

  • Heraklion Archaeological Museum  (AMH)
    • Heraklion Archeological Museum located at Stefanou Xanthoudidou, Heraklion.
    • Rooms I-XV hold the largest collection of Minoan Art and Artefacts in the world, including the Phaistos Disc.
    • Room XX holds Sculptures from the Classical Greek and Roman periods.
  • Historical Museum of Crete, Heraklion
    • Historical Museum of Crete located at Leof. Sofokli Venizelou, Heraklion.
    • The Museum holds Artefacts from 395 CE to 1945 CE including Coins, Jewelry, Ceramics and Sculptures.
