Horus

The Eye of Horus

  • Horus was often portrayed as a falcon.
  • The Eye was painted on the Bows of Vessels to ward off evil and ensure a safe journey.
  • His right eye was associated with Ra the Sun God.
  • His left eye (a mirror image) was associated with the Moon and the God Thoth.
  • Seven Hieroglyphs represent the Eye of Horus. It was the symbol of a force of protection or of anger.

Combat with Set

  • After the death of his Father Osiris, Horus entered into a combat with his uncle Set, in order to inherit the throne, during which Set gouged out the left eye of Horus. Thoth or Hathor restored the Eye using magic.
  • Horus then offered his Eye to his father Osiris, to help him return to Life. This is why it came to symbolise sacrifice, healing and protection.
