- The Iron Gates are a series of Gorges stretching 83 miles (134km) on the River Danube, forming the Frontier between Roumania and Serbia.
- They are not to be confused with the Iron Gate of Transylvania, which is a mountain Pass in Roumania.
Description
- The Iron Gates refers particularly to the last Gorge which was impassable.
- The Romans built a Canal alongside to bypass the Gorge.
The Great Kazan.
- This is the narrowest Gorge at 492 ft (150m) across and 174ft (53m) deep.
- It was here that Trajan built a bridge between 103-105 CE for the invasion of Dacia.
- A medieval fortress called Golubec Castle stands at the entrance to the Gorge.
