- It is the largest island in England and is separated from Hampshire by the Solent. It was known to the Romans as Vectis.

- It is possibly associated with Ictis or Mictis in the Tin Islands which formed part of the Ancient Tin Trade of Britannia.

- Located on a hillside near Brading the villa holds excellent mosaics.
