- John of Patmos is thought to be the same person as John the Apostle (c.5-100 CE) and John the Evangelist, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus.
- He is the author of the Gospel of John, the Three Epistles of John and the Book of Revelation. He is not to be confused with the earlier John the Baptist (1st century BCE-c. 30 CE).

- According to Eusebius, in 95 CE Domitian (81-96 CE) exiled the Apostle John to Patmos where he was inspired to write the Book of Revelation.
- The Book of Revelation is thought to have been written between 60-95 CE by John the Apostle (c.5-100 CE), one of the Twelve Apostles.
