Jugurtha

  • Jugurtha (160-104 BCE) was the illegitimate grandson of King Massanissa of Numidia. He was born in Cirta, Constantine, in Algeria.
  • He vied with Massanissa’s legitimate heirs to become King of Numidia. The Roman Republic became concerned and eventually sent several Legions to intervene.

Jugurthine War (111-104 BCE)

  • In 107 BCE, the Roman General Marius arrived in Numidia and pushed Jugurtha into the south.
  • In 105 BCE Jugurtha was captured, ending the War and Marius took him back to Rome in chains.
  • He was placed in the Tullianum, where in 104 BCE he was executed.
