Julia Felix

  • The Julia Felix is a Roman Shipwreck that was located off the coast of the lagoon island of Grado in northeastern Italy.
  • The vessel dates to c. 150 CE and carried a cargo of 600 Amphorae, broken glass for reuse and an aquarium to transport live fish.

Description

  • The Julia Felix sank 6 miles (10km) off the island of Grado in the Adriatic.
  • The vessel measured 59 feet (18m) in length by 19 feet (6m) in width.
  • The 600 amphorae were mostly reused and came from a variety of regions, the Eastern Aegean, North Africa and the Adriatic coasts.
  • The vessel carried an aquarium of live fish in seawater with a lead pipe which pierced the hull and probably allowed fresh seawater to be pumped in for the fish. Also, the vessel carried a barrel filled with broken glass for re-use..

  • Museo Nazionale dell’ Archeologia Subacquea
    • The National Museum of Underwater Archeology is being built to house the wreck and cargo of the Julia Felix, and is not yet open to the Public.
