- The Karakum Desert, also known as the Gara-Gum Desert, is a Desert that covers over two thirds of Turkmenistan, a country on the east coast of the Caspian Sea.
- It lies in an east west direction consisting of rocks covered in Sand Sand dunes.
River Oxus
- The eastern border of Turkmenistan is formed by the River Amu Darya, known in Antiquity as the River Oxus.
- The river flows from Afghanistan to a Delta in the South Aral Sea.
Karakum Canal
- In 1953 the Soviet Government built an irrigation canal to the south of the dried up Uzboy riverbed.
- The Water was diverted from the Amu Darya to irrigate the Karakum Desert, which led to the drying up of the Aral Sea.
