Kharga Oasis

  • The Kharga Oasis, also known as Oasis Magna to the Romans and as the Southern Oasis to the Ancient Egyptians, is the most southern of Egypt's five oases in the Libyan Desert.

Camel Caravan Route

  • A Camel Caravan Route described as The ‘Way of the Forty’ by Herodotus ran from Kobbei, Darfur in Sudan to the Nile at Asyut, via the Kharga Oasis.
  • The Romans built a chain of forts at all the oases to protect the caravans.

Temples

  • The Temple of Hibis (c.500 BCE) is one of many Ancient Egyptian and Roman Sites in the Oasis, which includes a Roman Christian Cemetery.
