Knucklebones

  • Knucklebones was a game involving the use of animal bones, possibly dating back as far as 5,000 BCE, which was popular with the Ancient Greeks and Romans, who used the anklebones of sheep.
  • The modern equivalent of the game is Jacks.

Description

  • It was known in Ancient Rome as ‘Tali’, and played with four bones having four sides.
  • The bones were either thrown up and caught on the back of the hand, or thrown on to a flat surface.
  • Whoever achieved the highest score was the winner.
