- The Limes Sarmatiae were a series of earth Embankments and Ditches with Forts at intervals, built by Constantine I during his reign 312-337 CE.
- They were ran east of the Danube, between Budapest and Viminacium, and were an addition to the Danube Limes.
History
- The Limes ran from Budapest (Aquincum) due east, then south to Viminacium.
- They were designed to protect the River Tisza, a Danube Tributary, and its Roman Allied Tribe, the Lasyges, from the Goths and Gepids.
- They were built over an earlier defensive line built by Marcus Aurelius (161-180 CE) during the Marcomannic Wars (168-180 CE).
- They complemented the Danube Limes.
- In 375 CE they were reinforced by Valentinian I (364-375 CE) when he subjugated the Quadi after an incursion.
- However, shortly after this, they were left unmanned, and lost permanently.
