Linen

• Linen is made from the Flax Plant and during the Roman Empire it was made from flax grown in Italy, Spain and Egypt.
• It was used in undergarments and as well as in finer men and women’s Tunics.

Production in the Roman Empire

• Italy
  • Linen was manufactured in Latium, Falerii and Paelignium.
• Spain
  • Linen was manufactured for export in three cities in Hispania Tarraconensis: Xativa (Saetabis) produced the best Linen according to Pliny the Elder, Ampuries (Emporia) and Tarragona (Tarraco).
• Egypt
  • Linen was also exported from Egypt.
