Litotes

  • Litotes is the use of understatement to emphasise a positive by using a negative to make the understatement.
  • For example: It’s not rocket science. Litotes is the opposite of Hyperbole.

Hyperbole

  • Hyperbole refers to an exaggerated overstatement that is not meant to be taken literally.
  • For example, ‘I’ve told you a thousand times no.’
