Little London

  • Little London is the buried Site of a Romano British settlement located on the river Roding in Chigwell in the County of Essex. The Site is not open to the Public.
  • It was Roman Durolitum, meaning ‘fort at the fort’, dating to the second century CE and was located on a Roman road from London to Great Dunmow.

History

  • F.R.Clark excavated the site between 1972 -1981.
  • The findings consisted of a Roman bath house, timber lined wells, 46 burials by cremation, Roman jewellery and pottery and 84 coins.
  • The remains of a Roman Villa also lie buried at another Site 1.5 miles (2.5km) away near Hill Farm. The Site is not open to the Public.
