Maastricht

  • Maastricht is a city on the river Meuse located in the Province of Limburg in the Netherlands.
  • It was a Roman Castrum established in the 1st century CE on the Via Belgica where a bridge crossed the river Meuse. This allowed Boulogne and Bavay to be linked with Cologne.

Roman Sites and Museums

  • Excavations have revealed the remains of the Bridge, Road, Baths, Granary, houses and the walls of the Castrum. The only visible Remains are in the cellar of the Derlon Hotel. The Temple is thought to have been underneath the Basilica of our Lady.
  • Items from the excavation are on display in the Public Library.
