- Manchester is a cathedral city located on three rivers, the Irwell, the Irk and the Medlock, and is in the County of Greater Manchester.
- It was founded in 79 CE as the Roman Fort of Mamucium by Agricola which is now located in the Castlefield area of Manchester.
History
- Mamucium defended the York to Chester Roman Road.
- A town grew up beside the Fort. It was linked with Castleshaw Roman Fort 16 miles (25km) to the East, and Condate Fort (Northwich) 18 miles (29km) to the west.
- It is listed in Iter X of the Antonine Itinerary.
