- Moesia was a region in the northern Balkans located south of the Danube which was inhabited by the Thracian, Dacian and Illyrian Tribes.
- It was occupied by the Roman Empire in 75 BCE and became a Roman Province in 6 CE. In 87 CE Domitian divided Moesia into Moesia Superior and Moesia Inferior.
History
- 82-44 BCE Moesia formed part of the Dacian and Getae Empire of King Burebista until his assassination, after which Moesia broke up into smaller entities.
- 75 BCE A Roman Army under the Proconsul of Macedonia was victorious in conquering the region.
- c. 29 BCE Consolidation was completed by the later Proconsul of Macedonia, Licinius Crassus.
- 6 CE Officially became a Province, with the capital at Viminacium near Stari Kostolec in Serbia. The Province was not yet divided.
- In 87 CE Domitian divided Moesia along the river Cebrus into Moesia Superior (Upstream Danube, modern Serbia) and Moesia Inferior (Downstream Danube).
- After 238 CE, Moesia was frequently overrun by the Goths.
- After 305 CE, Moesia formed part of Diocletian's Praetorian Prefectures ruled by the Eastern Roman Empire.
- After 587 CE, it was lost to the Slavs and Avars.
