- Mohenjo Daro is a lost city from the Indus Valley Civilisation (c. 2,500-c. 1,700 BCE), that was founded in c. 2,500 BCE.
- It is a Unesco World Heritage Site, located on the right bank of the river Indus in the Sindh Province of Pakistan, 50 miles (80km) southwest of Sukkur.
History
- The city was discovered in 1922, along with the discovery of Harappa in 1921, by the British Archeologist Sir John Hubert Marshall.
- It was modelled on a street grid with a well-planned water and drainage system, and had a circumference of 3 miles (5km).
- Little is known of its history or occupants or why it ceased to function.
- Its relationship with Harappa, which was a slightly smaller city located 400 miles (643km) to the northeast, is unknown.
