- Muziris is mentioned in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea (1st century CE) as being the main port of trade for the Chera Kingdom in India.
- Muziris was the first Port of call in the Trade between India and Egypt under the Roman Empire.
Location Unknown
- Muziris is a Lost Port. Muziris was probably lost after a Cyclone and massive Flooding of Periyar in 1341 CE.
- It is thought to have been located north of Cochin, near Cranganore, possibly at Kodungallur.
In 1983, after excavations near Pattanam revealed a roman coin hoard, there is currently a debate as to whether this might be the location of Muziris.
Muziris Papyrus
- A Papyrus dating from the second century CE, and written in Greek, records a contract between a Merchant of Alexandria and a Financier, regarding a cargo of Pepper and Spices from Muziris.
- The contract describes a loan agreement for a cargo worth approximately 9,000,000 sesterces carried from Muziris on a Roman vessel called the ‘Hermapollon’.
Thomas the Apostle
- Thomas the Apostle was one of the Twelve Apostles and is considered by Indian Christians to be the Patron Saint of India.
- According to the Acts of Thomas, one of the Apocrypha in the New Testament, Thomas was sent from Judaea to Muziris in 52 CE, on a Mission to convert India to Christianity.
